Grass Fed Beef
Why order grass fed beef?
What is grass fed beef
Grass fed cows live their whole life on a pasture and forage diet just as nature intended them to do. Since grass fed cows are raised in safer and more sterile living conditions, the quality of beef turns out far superior compared to grain fed cows. Grass fed beef tends to be much lower in total fat than grain fed beef.
The misconception that meat is meat and what the cow is fed during its life does not affect the nutritional value of the beef from that cow is just not true. A cows diet significantly influences the nutrient content and quality of the beef produced.
Grass fed versus grain fed
Grass fed cows are raised with care, free of hormones and antibiotics. Because of this, the beef produced has a higher amount of nutrients and healthy fats.
Grain fed cows lead a more stressful life. Just like humans, when a cow gets stressed they produce the stress hormone cortisol. When cortisol is produced the cow gets fatter and produces tougher and flavorless meat.
These cows are typically raised in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO). These cows are raised in confinement. Cows in CAFO's often get sick and because of the confinement and close quarters, healthy cows are then in contact with sick cows.
When a cow gets sick in a CAFO, they are given large amounts of antibiotics to prevent illness from spreading to the other cows. Not only are you consuming these antibiotics when you eat store bought meat but you are also taking in some of the hormones that these cows are given which is unnatural to your body.
Cows in CAFO's are pumped with hormones to help make them grow bigger and faster. The more a cow weighs when sold, the more money the factory farmers make.
